Overview
The Q3 has secured the highest accolade of a 5-Star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), showcasing its commitment to safety and robust performance on the road. While facing challenges in a few updated tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Q3 has maintained its reputation by consistently achieving top scores of Good across most key categories, reaffirming its status as a reliable and trustworthy choice for drivers prioritizing safety.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The standard 261-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, complemented by a 12-volt hybrid system, offers ample power for most drivers, catering to their needs with ease. However, for those craving even more power, the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, featuring a 48-volt hybrid system and delivering 335 horsepower, presents an enticing option. In our testing of a 2020 Q7 equipped with the turbo V-6, we clocked an impressive 5.0-second sprint to 60 mph, slightly outpacing similar models like the two-row Q8 SUV. Surprisingly agile despite its size, the Q7, especially when equipped with optional performance tires on 21-inch wheels, exudes a low-slung, sporty demeanor reminiscent of a pumped-up sport wagon. The optional air suspension, coupled with the enhanced maneuverability afforded by four-wheel steering, imbues the Q7 with a surprising level of enjoyment on twisty back roads, while still maintaining a smooth ride quality.
Fuel Economy
Surprisingly, both the turbocharged 4-cylinder and the turbo V6 versions of the 2024 Audi Q7 deliver identical fuel efficiency figures, achieving 21 mpg combined. However, there’s a slight distinction in highway driving, with the 4-cylinder boasting a slightly higher rating of 25 mpg compared to the V6’s 24 mpg. Both engines are rated at 19 mpg in city driving. While this combined figure is fairly standard for the class, it’s worth noting that an AWD Acura MDX matches this figure, while an AWD Infiniti QX60 performs marginally better. On the other hand, the Audi SQ7, featuring a twin-turbo V8, returns 15 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined.
Sophisticated Cabin
All Audi Q7 variants feature three rows of seating, accommodating up to seven passengers. Unlike some competitors, there’s no option for second-row captain’s chairs, meaning all models come standard with a 3-across bench configuration.
Even in the Audi SQ7, this layout remains consistent. While the second row offers ample legroom at 38.8 inches, comfortably accommodating adults, the third row, with its 29.2 inches of legroom, is better suited for occasional use, particularly by smaller individuals.
The interior of the Q7 boasts excellent material quality and a sophisticated design. Despite being filled with technology, it strikes a balance, avoiding overwhelming the driver. A 10.1-inch touchscreen handles infotainment functions, while a smaller 8.6-inch screen below manages climate control settings.
Audi’s renowned 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit, serving as a high-definition instrument cluster, maintains its sharpness, although it’s been in use for some time. Nonetheless, the Q7’s screen configuration and graphics are beginning to show signs of aging. Having debuted in 2017 and last updated in 2020, anticipation is high for a complete redesign of the Q7 expected within the next year or two.
Standard features include genuine leather upholstery, available in various colors, with Okapi Brown being a standout option. Another appreciated feature is the presence of an actual gear shift in the center column, eschewing the trend of using buttons or switches seen in some competing models.
Handsome Body
Audi’s design philosophy impresses with its ability to blend sophistication and understated elegance seamlessly. In the case of the Q7, this approach results in a contemporary aesthetic accentuated by features like Matrix-design LED headlights and a grille that commands attention without overwhelming.
Wheel choices range from 19 inches for standard models to impressive 22-inch options for the SQ7, providing a range of styling possibilities. The paint selection is equally captivating, with metallic blues like Navarra and Waitomo adding depth and richness to the vehicle’s appearance.
In the 2024 model year, Q7 55 Prestige models have the option to elevate their design with the addition of the S line sport package. This package boasts distinct 21-inch 5-spoke blade design wheels, eye-catching red brake calipers, and black optic design elements, enhancing the Q7’s visual appeal. Notably, the SQ7 stands out with quad tailpipes, signaling its performance-oriented nature.
Safety
Standard on all Q7 models are advanced safety and driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control with lane guidance. Notably, the Audi Q7 has achieved the highest 5-Star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Q7 demonstrated excellent performance, earning the top rating of “Good” in all crashworthiness categories. However, it received a “Poor” rating in the “headlights” category, which is the only area of concern in an otherwise stellar safety record.
