The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado finds itself at the pinnacle of the midsize truck category, offering exceptional road manners, towing capabilities, and attractive design, with added off-road prowess for the latest model year. Catering to various needs, from worksite duties to leisurely outings by the lake or urban commutes, the 2024 Colorado impresses across the board. While the absence of a V6 or diesel engine is noted, the performance of two of its turbocharged 4-cylinder engines is commendable. Following a redesign in 2023, Chevy has delivered a comfortable and technologically advanced 4-door pickup that meets a wide array of demands. Since its update last year, the Colorado’s appeal has only grown stronger, solidifying its position as a standout option in its class.

In 2024, Chevrolet introduced the Colorado ZR2 Bison edition, a collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) aimed at off-road enthusiasts. This rugged variant boasts a range of features tailored for challenging terrain, including 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, boron-steel skid plates and rocker protectors, leading approach and departure angles in its class, power-locking front and rear differentials, and more. With a ground clearance of 12.2 inches, the ZR2 Bison is ready to tackle even the toughest obstacles. Additionally, it comes equipped with the High-Output turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as standard.

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado kicks off at $31,095 for the base WT trim, slightly below the segment’s average for entry-level trucks. For comparison, competitors like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma start around $33,000. Each Colorado variant features a 4-door Crew Cab configuration with a short cargo box. Sitting atop the lineup is the ZR2 Bison, priced at $60,540, tailored for serious off-road enthusiasts. However, for most buyers, the LT trim strikes a good balance. While 4-wheel drive is optional for the WT and LT trims at an extra $3,300, it comes standard on the higher-end models. The LT offers a reasonable package for the price, but upgrading to the Turbo Plus 4-cylinder engine with 310 horsepower may be tempting for those seeking extra power.

2024 Chevrolet ColoradoMSRP
Colorado WT$31,095
Colorado LT$33,495
Colorado Trail Boss$38,895
Colorado Z71$41,795
Colorado ZR2$48,395
Colorado ZR2 Bison$60,540

Each Colorado model boasts Chevy’s turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four engine, with power outputs varying by trim level. All Colorados are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The WT and LT trims come standard with 237 horsepower, while the Z71, Trail Boss, and ZR2 models utilize the higher-output version, generating 310 horsepower. This powertrain surpasses the V-6 offerings in competitors like the Jeep Gladiator, Ridgeline, and Tacoma. It’s also available as an option for the WT and LT trims. Familiar to the full-size Silverado 1500 lineup, this engine delivers robust performance. During our testing, the ZR2 accelerated to 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds. While the Colorado maintains an independent front suspension and solid rear axle with leaf springs across models, the ZR2 stands out with its Mutlimatic DSSV dampers and power-locking front and rear differentials for unparalleled off-road capability. For the ultimate off-road experience, the ZR2 Bison boasts massive 35-inch tires, offering exceptional ground clearance of 12.2 inches and enhanced breakover and departure angles. With hydraulic front and rear bump stops, the Bison is equipped to handle rugged terrain, including jumps.

It’s not unexpected that the base Turbo engine achieves the highest fuel efficiency, rated at 22 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The Turbo Plus variant follows closely with 20 mpg, while the Turbo HO trails behind at 18 mpg. Opting for 4-wheel drive with either the Turbo or Turbo Plus trims reduces their respective fuel economy by one mile per gallon. These fuel efficiency estimates fall within the average range for the class.

From our perspective, the redesigned interior of the 2024 Colorado midsize truck represents a notable leap forward over its predecessor, offering a blend of functionality, comfort, and style.

While some may perceive the presence of plastic in the Work Truck and Trail Boss models, it serves a practical purpose, aligning with the rugged demands expected of these variants. Moving up to the LT trim brings a touch of sophistication, with silver accents and softer textures enhancing the overall ambience.

Meanwhile, the Z71 trim exudes a sportier aesthetic, characterized by its striking black and red accents on cloth and simulated leather surfaces. Despite the Colorado’s third-generation model boasting a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, rear passenger space hasn’t seen a significant expansion.

However, within the realm of crew cab configurations, the Colorado offers competitive second-row legroom, ensuring passengers can still enjoy a comfortable ride.

In contrast to the myriad cab and bed configurations seen in full-size trucks, the 2024 Colorado takes a simplified approach, offering a single option: a 4-door crew cab paired with a short bed measuring 61.7 inches.

While this may seem limiting compared to its competitors, which often provide variations like models with full front doors and two rear half doors, the Colorado’s setup streamlines the truck shopping experience.

Despite its shorter bed length, the Colorado maximizes cargo versatility with numerous securing features. It boasts eight fixed tie-down cleats, complemented by up to nine additional movable points, ensuring items stay secure during transit.

Moreover, the tailgate features an adjustable mid-position to accommodate longer cargo, while grooves in the front bed wall cater to cycle wheels. Bed pockets and an optional storage area within the tailgate further enhance utility, with the convenience of a 120-volt outlet available as well. Not to be overlooked, the standard Corner Step rear bumper adds practicality to the mix.

The crash safety ratings for both the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado and its counterparts from other manufacturers are currently unavailable, as neither the government nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has conducted crash tests on these vehicles. Nevertheless, all models of the Colorado come equipped with essential safety features, including forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and high-beam assist, contributing to enhanced safety on the road.
