The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD receives notable upgrades, enhancing its status as a formidable heavy-duty pickup. With options for a gas or diesel V8 engine, the Silverado HD offers exceptional towing and hauling capabilities. This year, it benefits from aesthetic enhancements, increased tech features, a more potent diesel engine, and the addition of an off-road ZR2 model. Competing against the Ford Super Duty and Ram heavy-duty trucks, the Silverado HD continues to impress in the segment.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD undergoes a comprehensive mid-cycle refresh, boasting updated aesthetics both inside and out. It introduces a range of new tech features, including a sizable 13.4-inch infotainment screen, adaptive cruise control, and an improved “transparent trailer” function. Mechanically, enhancements include a turbocharged V8 diesel engine delivering an additional 25 horsepower and 65 lb-ft of torque, enabling a maximum towing capacity of 36,000 pounds when properly configured. Furthermore, the standard gas V8 engine now pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous 6-speed. Exciting additions to the lineup are the off-road-oriented ZR2 and ZR2 Bison models, marking the largest Chevy trucks to sport the ZR2 badge. These rugged variants feature upgraded tires and suspension, generous ground clearance, and a robust appearance package designed to optimize performance on adventurous terrain.

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD lineup offers a variety of trims to suit different needs and budgets. Starting with the 2500HD Work Truck at $44,400, prices climb as you move up the ladder. The mid-range LT trim begins at $50,395, followed by the LTZ model starting at $61,395. However, the LTZ’s starting price sees a significant increase due to its unavailability with a Single Cab. For those seeking luxury, the High Country trim starts at $73,995. If rugged off-road capability is your priority, the ZR2 model is available starting at $72,595. Prices can further increase with options like larger cabs, the turbo diesel V8, or the 3500 chassis, adding approximately $10,000 for the diesel and around $1,000 for the 3500 chassis compared to the 2500 counterpart. Configuration-specific costs may vary.

The Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD pack a standard 6.6-liter V-8 gasoline engine delivering 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking even more power, there’s the optional Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V-8 from the previous generation, boasting 470 horsepower and a staggering 975 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission and offer the choice between rear- or four-wheel drive, compatible with single or dual rear-wheel axles. Our experience towing heavy loads with the diesel showcased its impressive capability, providing a level of confidence and security, especially in challenging terrains. While the gasoline engine holds its own, the Duramax powertrain stands out for heavy towing duties. However, steering precision could be improved, even with the electric assist system. Nevertheless, the Silverado’s ride quality remains surprisingly smooth, both on and off the road. In our off-road test of the ZR2 Bison model, the Silverado HD demonstrated remarkable capability and comfort, showcasing its versatility across diverse terrains.

Having tested the Chevy Silverado HD in towing and hauling scenarios, it proves itself well-suited to its intended tasks. Towing loads of up to 14,000 pounds, the available Duramax diesel engine performs admirably, never lacking in power or struggling to keep up. Meanwhile, the standard gas engine, while adequate, feels a bit strained, particularly on inclines. Pushing the dually 3500 model to its limits with a hefty 32,000-pound load, the Duramax diesel remains steadfast, though at a slower pace compared to lighter loads with the same engine. For those frequently towing heavy loads, opting for the diesel engine is the wise choice. However, if seeking a truck with more power than a half-ton pickup like the Silverado 1500, the more budget-friendly gas engine suffices. In terms of ride comfort, the Silverado HD provides a decent driving experience, although it falls short of the plushness offered by the air suspension available in the Ram Heavy Duty. Maneuvering in tight spaces can be a bit challenging, but this is to be expected from a truck of this size.

As the EPA doesn’t evaluate vehicles as hefty as the Silverado HD and its formidable rivals, assessing their real-world fuel efficiency relies on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route. While we haven’t had the opportunity to evaluate the 2024 Silverado HD yet, we’ll ensure to provide updated insights on its performance once tested.

While Chevrolet asserts that all iterations of the 2024 Silverado HD truck lineup feature updated interiors, the most significant enhancements are evident in the LT trim and beyond.

These variants boast a sizable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a generous 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, cleverly angled towards the driver for ease of use. Notably, the upper trims introduce a new center console, complete with a designated space for wireless smartphone charging, aiming to reduce distractions while on the road.

A discreet hidden compartment behind the infotainment screen adds a touch of practicality. Across the cabin configurations, from Regular Cab to Crew Cab, ample space is provided for occupants. The Crew Cab, in particular, offers a generous 43.3 inches of rear legroom, comparable to its counterparts in the Ford Super Duty and Ram HD.

Impressively comfortable rear seats are a highlight of the Crew Cab models. From the utilitarian Work Truck trim, featuring durable materials geared for rugged conditions, to the opulent High Country variant, exuding an air of luxury akin to upscale SUVs, the Silverado HD lineup spans a spectrum of offerings catering to varied preferences and requirements.

In 2024, the Silverado HD receives subtle yet discernible updates, notably to its front end and headlights, with higher trims now boasting LED headlights featuring dual projectors.

Noteworthy details include the prominent Chevrolet branding in uppercase letters on the hood scoop, along with standard tow hooks and an expanded range of paint options. Introducing a new Midnight Edition package for the High Country trim, the trend towards blacked-out exterior accents is embraced, complemented by retractable side steps equipped with LED lighting.

Retaining appreciated features from previous iterations, such as bed steps on the sides and rear bumper, the Silverado HD offers versatility in cab styles (Regular, Double, or Crew) and bed lengths (standard or long). The six-function Multi-Flex tailgate stands out as a favorite option, enhancing the truck’s utility with its ability to transform into cab steps, load stops, and even a functional workspace.

Each Silverado HD model comes equipped with a comprehensive array of driver-assistance features, including several tailored specifically for towing, facilitating a smoother towing experience. Among these features is a practical multiview camera system, complete with a transparent mode designed to simplify parking lot maneuvers and highway merging while towing. This innovative feature provides drivers with a virtual view through the trailer, enhancing visibility and maneuverability.
