Overview
The Chevrolet Trax makes a bold return to the subcompact SUV scene in 2024 with a complete redesign, boasting enhancements both inside and out. With increased dimensions compared to its predecessor, the new Trax offers improved passenger and cargo space, complemented by a host of additional standard features and advanced safety technologies. Starting at $20,400, the Trax is powered by the same turbocharged 3-cylinder engine found in the current Trailblazer, appealing to budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable yet spacious crossover. Notably, Chevy includes its Safety Assist bundle across all Trax models, and with the introduction of five trim levels, there’s a wider range of options to suit various preferences and budgets, each distinguished by unique design elements such as grilles, wheels, and interior accents.
What’s New for 2024?
The 2024 Trax undergoes a comprehensive redesign, introducing numerous new elements including an extended wheelbase, increased interior room, and an expanded standard feature set. Sporting a new engine and drawing inspiration from the Blazer, its design exudes a fresh appeal. Enhanced infotainment touchscreens, coupled with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, offer seamless smartphone integration. Furthermore, Chevy’s Safety Assist suite, encompassing a range of safety and driver-assistance technologies, comes standard across all trim levels, ensuring enhanced safety for every driver.

Driving The 2024 Chevrolet Trax
The new Chevy Trax is equipped with a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Despite its turbocharging, this engine tends to feel rather lethargic in performance. While it offers sufficient low-end power for city driving and can eventually reach highway speeds, we observed a noticeable delay in power delivery when accelerating, particularly on highway ramps. However, where the Trax lacks in power, it compensates with impressive fuel efficiency, boasting a combined fuel economy rating of 30 mpg. Although its suspension may feel somewhat firm on rough roads, it surprisingly delivers sportier handling than anticipated, adeptly maneuvering through quick turns and maintaining stability on winding roads, reminiscent of a compact hatchback or sedan.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Each Chevrolet Trax is propelled by a turbocharged 1.2-liter inline-three engine, generating 137 horsepower, and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Unlike its all-wheel-drive Trailblazer counterpart, the Trax is solely available with front-wheel drive. Despite its larger size compared to the Trailblazer, the Trax exhibits quicker acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 8.8 seconds. With torque readily available at lower revs, the Trax offers adequate initial power, albeit hindered by its somewhat sluggish transmission response. Boasting carlike handling, the Trax feels notably nimble on the road, showcasing agility surpassing many competitors in its class. Complemented by a reassuringly firm brake pedal and predictable steering, the Trax offers buyers exceptional value, solidifying its position as a top choice among affordable new vehicles.
Fuel Economy
The 2024 Chevy Trax achieved an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway. During our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, the Trax delivered an impressive 30 mpg.
Plenty Of Space
The interior of the Chevy Trax is well-designed, featuring user-friendly tech features and a thoughtfully laid-out dashboard. The driver-oriented touchscreen is packed with features, complemented by intuitive knobs and buttons for HVAC controls.
Up front, the Chevy Trax offers ample space and comfortable seating, even during extended drives. While the base LS trim’s seat fabric may feel a bit basic, upgrading to nicer seats is affordable, even on the higher trim levels priced under $24k.
In the rear, the Trax impresses with best-in-class legroom, making it a practical choice for small families. Both rear legroom and headroom are generous, catering well to adult passengers. However, the absence of rear-seat air vents is a minor drawback.
Cargo space is another highlight, with the Trax offering 25.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, making it one of the most spacious in its class. Folding down the rear seats provides even more cargo room, enhancing its versatility further.
Lower, Wider, Better
The 2024 Chevy Trax benefits from increased dimensions compared to its predecessor, resulting in a more spacious interior.
The wider track width enhances stability and gives the Trax a more grounded stance. Additionally, a noticeable decrease in height contributes to its sleeker appearance, reminiscent of the larger Blazer model.
Designers took inspiration from the Blazer when crafting the exterior of the 2024 Trax, evident in its striking resemblance to its larger counterpart, especially from the front. Overall, these design enhancements give the Trax a newfound allure and contemporary appeal.
Safety
Each Trax model includes the Chevy Safety Assist suite, offering a range of driver-assistance features. For comprehensive crash-test results, consult the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Notable safety amenities comprise standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and optional adaptive cruise control.
