2024 Ford Expedition Reviews, Prices and Specs

Renowned for its refined driving dynamics, luxurious interior, and exceptional capabilities, the 2024 Ford Expedition stands out as one of our top choices among full-size SUVs.

Ideal for accommodating large families with ease, the Expedition excels in effortlessly handling extensive luggage and towing tasks, whether it’s a boat, Airstream, or other recreational items. Its robust truck-based construction ensures durability and impressive towing capacity, while refined suspension tuning delivers a comfortable ride quality reminiscent of a sedan rather than a truck. Inside, the Expedition offers a wealth of amenities, including ample cup holders, advanced technology features, and seating for up to eight passengers, making it a versatile and highly desirable choice for both daily commutes and adventurous road trips.

Since its introduction in the 2018 model year, the current generation of the Expedition has remained largely unchanged. However, we anticipate a significant update for the 2025 model year.

The base XL STX variant of the 2024 Ford Expedition begins at $56,075, with an additional $3,000 for Max versions. However, the XL STX and Timberline trims do not offer the Max option.

2024 Ford ExpeditionMSRP
Expedition XL STX$56,075
Expedition XLT$60,410
Expedition Limited$68,960
Expedition Timberline$72,550
Expedition King Ranch$79,015
Expedition Platinum$81,245

Powering the Expedition is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission, available with rear- or all-wheel drive. In standard form, this engine delivers 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. However, on Limited models, these numbers are increased to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. For even more power, the Timberline trim and Limited with the Stealth Performance package offer an enhanced version, boasting 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Impressively, the Timberline model achieved a swift 0-60 mph time of just 5.1 seconds during our track testing, outperforming the V-8-powered Tahoe Z71 by a notable 2.4 seconds. Additionally, the Stealth Performance model further improved upon this time by 0.2 seconds compared to the Timberline. All Expeditions feature an independent rear suspension, providing passengers with a comfortable ride, although the driver may experience some drawbacks such as ungainly handling and imprecise steering feel. When it comes to towing capacity, the Expedition can haul up to 9300 pounds, while the longer Expedition Max is rated at a slightly lower 9000 pounds.

Unless it’s the Timberline trim, the 2024 Expedition is expected to achieve 19 combined mpg (17 city, 23 highway) with rear-wheel drive. Opting for 4-wheel drive reduces each figure by one mile per gallon. The Timberline variant, equipped with standard 4-wheel drive, achieves 17 combined mpg (16 city, 19 highway).

Comparatively, the Toyota Sequoia demonstrates greater fuel efficiency despite the Expedition’s enhanced power. While the base engine of the Chevy Tahoe consumes slightly more fuel than the Expedition, it compensates with a diesel option capable of achieving 24 combined mpg.

Across the various trims of the 2024 Expedition, whether outfitted with cloth upholstery or deluxe leather interiors, and offering two or three rows of seating with either bench seats or captain’s chairs, the consistent count of 15 beverage holders hints at the immense size of its cabin.

Maneuvering from the driver’s seat to the cargo area feels like a journey in itself, especially in the Max version, underscoring its expansive interior.

Complementing this spaciousness is an optional larger infotainment touchscreen in the middle trims and standard in the top two trims, boasting a 15.5-inch diagonal orientation, rivaled in size only by Tesla.

Lower trims feature an impressive 12-inch screen, with materials that exude a higher quality than its Chevy counterpart. With a maximum seating capacity of eight, adjustable to seven with second-row captain’s chairs, the Expedition prioritizes comfort and accessibility.

Even tall adults will find ample legroom in the second and third rows, totaling 42.6 and 40.9 inches, respectively, across all versions, including the Max.

Capitalizing on its extended length, the Max model offers greater cargo space, accommodating 36 cubic feet behind the third row compared to the regular version’s 20.9 cubic feet. Folding down the second and third rows expands cargo capacity to 121.5 cubic feet for the Max and 104.6 cubic feet for the regular variant. While substantial, these figures fall slightly short of the cargo space offered by the Chevy Tahoe and extended Suburban.

Each fresh Expedition boasts roof rails, running boards, and a tailgate featuring a separate-opening glass section. Alloy wheel options span from 18 to 22 inches in size.

Notably, the Max iteration stretches out to an extended overall length of 221.9 inches, in contrast to the standard version’s 210 inches. Prospective buyers should consider measuring their garage’s depth before opting for the Max variant.

The current Expedition model has achieved a top-notch 5-Star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Equipped with a range of standard safety features such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, as well as blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking, it offers robust protection and assistance to drivers and passengers alike.
