Offering turbocharged performance and commendable fuel efficiency, the 2024 Jeep Compass with all-wheel drive (AWD) stands out with its above-average off-road capabilities, bridging the gap between the Renegade and the Cherokee in Jeep’s lineup. While Jeep vehicles may not appeal to every driver, the 2024 Compass serves as a rugged option for those seeking off-road readiness in a small SUV. Positioned between compact and subcompact SUV categories, it presents itself as a versatile choice, boasting a capable AWD system, intuitive infotainment interface, and a robust suite of advanced driver-assist technologies. Its practicality makes it suitable for a range of drivers, including young families, empty nesters, and singles.

In 2023, Jeep introduced a revamped engine, transmission, and enhanced safety technologies for the Compass, resulting in minimal changes for the 2024 model year. However, Jeep has implemented a new grille insert for all trims and equipped the Trailhawk grade with new all-terrain tires, although these updates are expected to roll out later in the 2024 production cycle.

The 2024 Jeep Compass lineup kicks off with the Sport trim, starting at $28,400, while the top-tier Trailhawk trim commands a price of $36,990. Positioned between these extremes is the Latitude trim, which starts at $33,265 and is often a favorite among buyers. For those considering a slightly smaller option within the Jeep family, the Renegade, estimated at $28,345, offers a compelling choice. Conversely, if you’re looking for something larger, the Cherokee, estimated at $37,695, may be worth considering.

Each Compass variant now boasts a revamped 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, delivering 221 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed transmission, all-wheel drive comes standard across the entire Compass lineup. For Trailhawk models, an additional low “crawler” gear ratio and Rock mode enhance off-road capabilities by keeping the vehicle in first gear and optimizing torque distribution to wheels with traction. During our test track evaluations, the turbocharged engine demonstrated ample power, propelling the Compass from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 7.5 seconds. Surprisingly nimble for its stature, the Compass exhibits responsive handling, supported by well-weighted steering, albeit with minimal feedback from the road. While there is noticeable body lean during sharp turns, overall, the Compass maintains a composed and confident demeanor on various road surfaces. Venturing off-road, the Compass impresses with its ability to tackle moderate obstacles, with the all-wheel-drive system delivering consistent performance without any noticeable hiccups.

According to the EPA, the Compass achieves fuel efficiency ratings of 24 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway. This signifies an improvement in both power and efficiency compared to the previous naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine. Once we have the opportunity, we’ll conduct our own 75-mph highway fuel economy test with the Compass and provide updated results in this article.

During its 2022 refresh, the Jeep Compass underwent notable enhancements, including the introduction of upgraded materials and refined design elements that elevate its overall interior appeal. The infusion of pleasing shapes and details contributes to a more aesthetically pleasing cabin environment.

Additionally, efforts were made to improve the cabin’s acoustic insulation, resulting in a quieter ride quality. Despite these improvements, the rear legroom remains somewhat constrained, measuring at approximately 38.3 inches.

While this aligns with the average for subcompact SUVs, it falls slightly below the standard set by larger compact SUVs. Consequently, adult passengers, particularly those of average size, may find the rear seating area less accommodating, especially if seated behind occupants of similar stature in the front.

Furthermore, the cargo space behind the rear seats offers 27.2 cubic feet, which, while functional, falls below the segment’s average. However, despite these limitations, the Jeep Compass continues to offer a compelling blend of style, comfort, and utility, making it a viable option for consumers seeking a versatile compact SUV.

With its unmistakable design cues and rugged aesthetic, there’s no denying that the 2024 Compass embodies the quintessential Jeep identity.

From its bold and upright grille to its muscular wheel arches, every element of the Compass’s exterior design screams Jeep heritage.

The squared-off silhouette and commanding stance further reinforce its off-road prowess, while the iconic seven-slot grille serves as a proud emblem of its lineage.

Whether navigating city streets or tackling rugged trails, the 2024 Compass exudes an aura of adventure and authenticity that is synonymous with the Jeep brand.

While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has yet to issue an overall safety rating for the Jeep Compass, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded it the highest score of “Good” across its various crash tests. However, there is a lack of updated scoring available for the 2023 and 2024 Compass models.
