Overview
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, already a standout in Subaru’s lineup as its best-selling vehicle, undergoes a complete redesign, signaling a new era for this beloved adventure wagon. While the changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary, the Crosstrek continues to charm with its spunky demeanor and versatile capabilities. Straddling the line between a wagon and an SUV, the Crosstrek has always appealed to active owners seeking a reliable vehicle for their adventures. The latest model year brings enhancements to ride comfort and cabin quietness, achieved through a stiffer chassis and refined suspension. While the manual transmission option is no longer available, Subaru introduces the rugged Wilderness model, catering to more adventurous drivers. Technological upgrades include a wider field of view for safety features like forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, along with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While Subaru remains tight-lipped about a hybrid version for now, it’s anticipated that future generations of the Crosstrek will embrace electrification in line with industry trends.
What’s New for 2024?
The third-generation Subaru Crosstrek sees a continuation of its evolutionary design philosophy, with subtle yet notable enhancements across the board. While the exterior features all-new sheet metal, the familiar lines of the previous generation are retained, albeit with some refinements. The grille is now more prominent, adorned with textured hexagons, while enlarged black air intakes flank the front corners, serving to cool the brakes. Additionally, the black plastic wheel-arch protectors have been upsized for a bolder appearance.
Under the skin, Subaru has reinforced the chassis for improved safety, while simultaneously tweaking the suspension to offer a softer ride quality. The EyeSight safety suite benefits from a wider field of view, enhancing its ability to detect vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians in front of the vehicle. Inside, the front seats receive upgrades in cushioning and bolstering for enhanced comfort.
Across all trim levels, the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enhances connectivity options. Higher trims feature an upgraded infotainment system, replacing the dual 7-inch touchscreens with a vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen display.
Joining the lineup is the rugged Wilderness trim, embodying the adventurous spirit of the Crosstrek. It boasts an appearance package optimized for off-road excursions, along with practical enhancements such as increased ground clearance, an off-road suspension system, all-terrain tires, and an enhanced dual-mode X-Mode system. Furthermore, the Wilderness trim introduces a more durable, water-resistant interior, making it the ultimate choice for outdoor enthusiasts.

Comfy Cabin
Subaru has implemented some changes to the interior, though they might not be immediately apparent to all but the most discerning Subaru enthusiasts, except for the prominent infotainment touchscreen in the higher trim levels.
However, Subaru has significantly enhanced the front seats, featuring increased padding and larger bolsters, which we found particularly comfortable, especially during off-road excursions.
Another notable improvement is the remarkable reduction in cabin noise, a commendable effort by Subaru.
While the interior still features a fair amount of plastic, it contributes to easier cleaning and maintenance.
Despite this, the Crosstrek offers better-than-average cargo space for its segment and average rear-seat legroom, making it suitable for adventures with up to four adults and their gear.
Familiar Wrapper
Subaru opted for a more conservative approach to the exterior styling of the Crosstrek, with the most notable changes occurring at the front end.
The updated grille, bumper, lower fascia, and new brake-cooling intakes offer a refreshed look while still retaining the recognizable Crosstrek identity.
Additionally, the new Wilderness model introduces a more rugged appearance package to the lineup, featuring increased ground clearance, aggressive cladding with prominent “SUBARU” lettering at the rear, yellow accents, and 17-inch black wheels fitted with all-terrain tires, distinguishing it from other Crosstrek models.
Features And Tech
Standard All-Wheel Drive
Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is among the most sophisticated and capable in the segment – improved for 2024 with faster response times – and it’s standard across the lineup.
8.7 Inches of Ground Clearance
A key contributor to the Crosstrek’s off-road superiority is its class-leading ground clearance.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Smartphone integration is even better when the connection happens automatically. Wireless phone charging is also available.
Large Touchscreen
All but the base Crosstrek feature an interior-dominating, vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen and robust infotainment offering. It’s reason enough to skip the base model and its dual 7-inch screen setup, of which we’ve never grown fond.
EyeSight Driver Assists
Every Crosstrek features the latest version of Subaru’s EyeSight collection of driver assist and safety technologies. Automatic emergency braking and steering, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, and automatic high beams are all standard.
Steering Responsive LED Headlights
The Crosstrek’s headlights turn in relation to the wheels, helping you see further into a corner. We’ve found this feature helpful in navigating dark roads and turning into dark driveways, even.
