2024 Tesla Model X Reviews, Prices and Specs

The Tesla Model X represents the epitome of electric luxury SUVs, combining impressive range, exhilarating performance, and advanced technology. Introduced as Tesla’s first SUV in 2015, the Model X has since established itself as a standard-bearer in the segment. It goes beyond being a mere SUV variant of the Model S sedan, offering similar outstanding powertrain options and cutting-edge features, alongside unique features like optional 3-row seating and the industry-exclusive Falcon Wing rear doors. With a maximum range of 335 miles, it outperforms most rivals, while the Plaid model’s incredible 2.5-second 0-60 mph acceleration blurs the distinction between practical SUV and high-performance supercar. However, like other Tesla models, the Model X is not immune to concerns such as inconsistent build quality and service-related challenges.

Tesla operates outside the traditional model year cycle, and for the 2024 Model X, there are no substantial updates. Notably, the Model X now features a standard conventional steering wheel, with the unconventional yoke-style option available for an additional $1,000.

The 2024 Tesla Model X has a starting price of $79,990 for the base dual-motor model, while the high-performance Plaid model starts at $94,990. Additional options can contribute to the final price, including 22-inch wheels ($5,500), 3-row seating ($3,500 for seven seats, $6,500 for six seats), Enhanced Autopilot ($6,000), and Full Self-Driving Capability ($12,000). With a starting sticker price just under the $80,000 threshold for SUVs, a base Model X without any added options may qualify for a $7,500 federal incentive.

The base Model X features standard dual electric motors—one at the front axle and one at the rear—providing all-wheel drive capability. This configuration offers impressive acceleration, with Tesla claiming a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. However, in our testing, even an older model surpassed this claim, achieving a swift 3.3-second sprint. The high-performance Plaid variant, equipped with three motors producing 1020 horsepower, boasts a claimed 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds. While we haven’t yet confirmed this acceleration figure on our test track, the Model S Plaid, the Model X’s sedan counterpart, achieved a staggering 2.1-second 0-60 mph time in our tests. Despite its hefty size and weight, the Model X delivers respectable handling, enhanced by the exhilarating acceleration generated by its electric powertrain.

In terms of range and charging speed, the Model X stands out among its competitors, rivaled only by the Rivian R1S. The dual-motor Tesla Model X boasts an impressive 335-mile range on a full charge, while the tri-motor Plaid model offers a slightly lower 326-mile range. Comparable models from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi typically hover around the 300-mile range mark. However, the Rivian R1S surpasses the Model X with a claimed 400-mile range when equipped with the dual-motor powertrain and Max Pack battery. Additionally, the upcoming Lucid Gravity is expected to achieve over 440 miles of range. When it comes to charging, the Model X can replenish 80% of its charge in just 30-40 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger or other DC fast charging station with a 250-kilowatt charger. While its competitors offer similar charging capabilities, the Model X’s above-average range translates to more miles of charge per hour, reducing range anxiety for drivers. With a vast network of over 50,000 charging stations globally, the Tesla Supercharger network further alleviates concerns about range limitations.

The 2024 Model X electric SUV comes standard as a 5-seater, with the option to add a third row for two passengers. This additional seating can be paired with either a set of captain’s chairs in the second row or a 3-person bench. Opting for the captain’s chairs not only enhances the comfort of the second row but also makes accessing the third row easier.

In line with the current trend, the Model X features a large 17-inch infotainment touchscreen, serving as the central hub for various functions. However, notable exclusions include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. Nevertheless, drivers benefit from a proper instrument cluster, a feature not consistently found in Tesla vehicles.

The return of a standard round steering wheel in the Model X is a welcome change, with the unconventional yoke now available as a $1,000 option. While it may not suit everyone’s preference, it distinctly embodies Tesla’s design ethos.

Inside, amenities such as the double-wide wireless charging pad, heated seats for all occupants, and vegan-friendly simulated leather upholstery enhance the overall experience. However, some readers have raised concerns about build quality inconsistencies, a common issue across Tesla models. This highlights an advantage of competitors from established luxury brands, which often deliver consistently excellent interior craftsmanship.

Despite any build quality concerns, the Model X offers ample occupant space beneath its expansive glass roof. Second-row legroom ranges from 38.7 to 39.8 inches, depending on the seating configuration, while the third row is suitable for younger passengers. Maximum cargo space varies from the high 80s to the low 90s cubic feet, complemented by an additional 6.5 cubic feet of storage space under the hood.

While many electric vehicles prioritize aerodynamic efficiency, often resulting in egg-shaped SUVs, the Tesla Model X deviates slightly from this norm. It incorporates sharp body lines along with a retractable spoiler, adding visual interest to its design. However, the Model X’s body has been a point of contention for some owners due to Tesla’s inconsistent build quality. Issues like uneven panel gaps and paint flaws have been reported, detracting from the overall experience of owning a luxury vehicle in this price range.

Both iterations of the Tesla Model X are powered by a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack. These batteries are utilized efficiently by the motors, resulting in impressive energy efficiency ratings.

The dual-motor model achieves a combined MPGe rating of 102, while the Plaid model offers 98 MPGe. In comparison, competitors from Rivian, Mercedes, BMW, and Audi fall short, with efficiency ratings below 90 MPGe.

This translates to lower fuel costs for the Tesla, making it a more economical choice in its class. However, the anticipated efficiency rating of the upcoming Lucid Gravity may potentially surpass that of the Model X, pending official EPA testing.

Tesla offers a standard new-car warranty for four years or 50,000 miles, a common practice in the luxury car segment. Additionally, the battery in the Model X is covered for eight years or 150,000 miles, providing extended peace of mind. However, feedback on the reliability and maintenance costs of Tesla vehicles has been varied among owners. Some have experienced long wait times at service centers and difficulties with parts availability. This situation may be exacerbated in areas with a high density of Tesla vehicles but limited service stations, potentially leading to challenges when servicing the Model X.

The Tesla Model X has not undergone crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) since 2021. However, it previously earned a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA during its last assessment.
